Filter Media Standards Explained

Tenders for water treatment works usually reference a filter media standard. Knowing what each one covers helps you write a clear specification and compare quotes on the same basis.

The main standards

What a good specification states

  • Effective size (d10) with a tolerance, for example 0.55 mm ± 0.05 mm
  • Uniformity coefficient, for example 1.5 or lower
  • Specific gravity and acid solubility limits
  • For anthracite: hardness, ash and friability or attrition limits
  • For sand: SiO2 content and maximum fines
  • Required documents, for example a certificate of analysis per batch

How we supply against a specification

Send the tender specification with your enquiry. We supply graded media against the stated effective size and uniformity coefficient, with a certificate of analysis for each batch. If a specific standard certificate is required, tell us at enquiry stage so we can confirm availability.
