Pool Filter Sand
Pool filter sand is washed, graded silica quartz that traps dirt, algae and fine particles as water passes through your pool’s sand filter. We supply it in 40 kg bags and 1-ton bulk bags, delivered across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and nationwide.
Which pool filter sand grade do I need?
| Grade | Best for | Order |
|---|---|---|
| 0.6 – 1.2 mm | Most residential and complex pool sand filters | Buy 0.6 – 1.2 mm |
| 0.8 – 1.4 mm | Larger filters and commercial pools with higher flow | Buy 0.8 – 1.4 mm |
| 1 mm | General pool filtration where 1 mm sand is specified | Buy 1 mm |
| 1 – 2 mm and 2 – 4 mm | Bottom support layer in larger filters | Buy 1 – 2 / 2 – 4 mm |
Always check the sand grade printed on your filter’s label or manual first.
How much sand does my pool filter need?

When to replace pool filter sand
Replace the sand every 3 to 5 years, or sooner if the water stays cloudy after a backwash, pressure climbs quickly after cleaning, or sand appears in the pool. Over time grains round off and clump, and the filter traps less.
Sand or glass media?
Glass media can filter slightly finer and lasts longer, but costs considerably more per bag. Graded silica sand remains the standard fill for South African pool filters and is what most filter manufacturers specify.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use builder’s sand or play sand in a pool filter?
No. Builder’s and play sand are not graded or washed for filtration. They clog the filter and can pass through the laterals into the pool.
Do you deliver to pool shops and contractors?
Yes. Pool shops, builders and service companies can order bulk bags or pallet loads of 40 kg bags. Ask us for trade pricing.
Which areas do you deliver to?
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, the East and West Rand, Cape Town and surrounds, Durban, and nationwide by courier or freight.
