Tenders for water treatment works usually reference a filter media standard. Knowing what each one covers helps you write a clear specification and compare quotes on the same basis.
The main standards
| Standard | Covers | Used where |
|---|---|---|
| AWWA B100 | Granular filter materials: filter sand, gravel, anthracite and garnet | Widely referenced in South African and African tenders, and the USA |
| EN 12904 | Silica sand and gravel for drinking water treatment | Europe; referenced by some consultants in Africa |
| EN 12909 | Anthracite for drinking water treatment | Europe; referenced by some consultants in Africa |
| EN 12910 | Garnet for drinking water treatment | Europe |
What a good specification states
- Effective size (d10) with a tolerance, for example 0.55 mm ± 0.05 mm
- Uniformity coefficient, for example 1.5 or lower
- Specific gravity and acid solubility limits
- For anthracite: hardness, ash and friability or attrition limits
- For sand: SiO2 content and maximum fines
- Required documents, for example a certificate of analysis per batch
How we supply against a specification
Send the tender specification with your enquiry. We supply graded media against the stated effective size and uniformity coefficient, with a certificate of analysis for each batch. If a specific standard certificate is required, tell us at enquiry stage so we can confirm availability.
