Iron & Manganese Removal Media
Borehole and groundwater in many parts of Africa carries dissolved iron and manganese that stains fixtures, discolours water and fouls pipes and membranes. Catalytic filter media oxidise the dissolved metals and trap them in the filter bed, where they are removed by backwashing. We supply manganese dioxide based catalytic media for domestic, agricultural, municipal and industrial filters.
What it removes
| Problem | Sign in the water |
|---|---|
| Dissolved iron | Orange-brown staining, metallic taste, cloudy water after standing |
| Dissolved manganese | Black or dark-brown staining and deposits |
| Hydrogen sulphide (low levels) | Rotten-egg smell |
Typical specification
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Active component | Manganese dioxide (MnO2) |
| Form | Granular, graded for pressure filters |
| Operating pH | Best performance in neutral to slightly alkaline water; confirm with your water analysis |
| Packaging | Bags and bulk bags |
Exact grade, size range and MnO2 content are stated on the certificate of analysis. Send us a water analysis and we will recommend the right media and bed depth.
Typical filter arrangement
Catalytic media is usually installed over a layer of support gravel, often capped with hydro anthracite to remove oxidised particles and extend run times. Some systems dose an oxidant such as chlorine ahead of the filter for high iron levels.
Frequently asked questions
Will ordinary filter sand remove iron?
Only iron that has already oxidised into particles. Dissolved iron and manganese need a catalytic media or oxidation step first.
Do I need a water test first?
Yes. Iron, manganese, pH and hardness levels decide which media and filter size will work.
